You are not just biochemical… You are bioelectrical.
We tend to think of health as purely biochemical: Hormones. Neurotransmitters. Nutrients. Labs. As humans, we are also inherently bioelectrical beings. Every heartbeat, nerve impulse, muscle contraction, and brainwave depends on tiny electrical signals generated within the body. Our cells communicate through changes in voltage, ion movement, and electromagnetic signaling—biology is, in many ways, electrical chemistry in motion.
The Earth carries a subtle negative electrical charge. Grounding—direct skin contact with the Earth through grass, soil, sand, or natural bodies of water—may allow the body to reconnect with this natural electrical environment.
Some emerging research suggests grounding may support:
- Improved autonomic nervous system balance
- Reduced perceived stress and muscle tension
- Improved sleep quality
- Lower markers of inflammation in some studies
- Better heart rate variability and nervous system regulation
While research is still evolving, many people notice that time spent barefoot outdoors helps them feel calmer, more regulated, and more connected—likely through a combination of sensory input, circadian light exposure, nature immersion, and possibly electrical interaction with the Earth.
Spring is finally in motion, which means it’s time to reconnect with our bare feet planted on the earth’s surface. Before you go running outside, however, bear in mind an important caveat: Do not touch exposed feet on chemically-treated grass. If you read my prior blog post on the detrimental effects of glyphosate- the active ingredient of the herbicide Roundup- this and other related herbicides are some of the most toxic chemicals known to man. Embrace nature’s medicine (hello, dandelion and red clover) and opt out of spraying not only for the benefit of the environment, but the health of you and your family.
